| A 12 year old boy called Charles Dickens pasted labels onto jars of black shoe polish in a London factory which was miserably cold and teeming with rats. Only 12 years later he was already on the path to becoming one of the most popular authors of his time. His work captivated his contemporaries and posed many riddles. The pervasive use of the adjective Dickensian is proof of his continued popularity. The exhibition with rich texts also in English, film and audio clips traces his life and his work and endeavours to unravel some of its many riddles. As the labelling of exhibits is good and many members know German, we decided to meet on a Saturday this time as at 4 o’clock there is a guided tour in German. If there are difficulties for some participants, we can translate. We anticipate having a fondue after the visit and would be happy if others want to join us. It will probably be at the Dezaley at around 18:00 but do phone to confirm for sure. |
