| Join us in combining in an informal way of meeting up in the autumn to enjoy some wonderful hidden gems of Lucerne. After mustering at the modern bar of the historic Schweizerhof Hotel (which lies directly across the lake from the railway station - five minutes walk) for a complementary drink, we will take a short stroll via the old town to visit the splendid Bourbaki Panorama. The panorama, a 112 by 10 meter completely circular painting by Edouard Castres depicts part of the German – Franco War of 1870 – 71. The painting set on the North Western part of the Swiss – French border, shows the retreat into Switzerland of the defeated Bourbaki Army. It has a wonderful perspective and is really a forerunner of the IMAX cinema of today It is only one of four panorama left in the world and is beautifully restored.
After the visit, lasting around one hour, we walk two minutes via the famous Lion of Lucerne, commemorating the last stand of the heroic Swiss Guards of Louis XVI at the Tullieries, to the Glacier Gardens These are formed around potholes left by glacial deposits 20 million years ago, and make a perfect setting for a small museum of inner Switzerland. Along with the Alhambra hall of mirrors maze from the 1896 National Fair, alpine plants and the terraced gardens, they make an ideal tea stop. After the visits we walk the short distance back to the centre for an early evening pizza supper by the river and a glass of wine or two. We hope you can join us.
